At FM Global our Database Developers work in SQL-Server/Windows and Oracle/UNIX environments. We have a few RdB/VMS environments also. Applications range from custom built to packaged software. DBAs design and develop databases. We also customize database objects in some packaged software. We provide all facets of database administration activity for both traditional and object-based applications. Database Developers develop, maintain and/or tune stored procedures (PL/SQL and/or TSQL). We write and maintain extract, transform and load (ETL) processes using tools appropriate to either the SQL Server, Oracle or RdB platforms. Database Developers install, configure, maintain, and/or upgrade relational database management software (RDBMS), as well as software used for database administration monitoring/alerting and maintenance. Database Developers are responsible for maintaining optimal database performance, security, and reliability/availability.
Database technology is an integral part of virtually all applications at FM Global. DBAs must understand the technical and business functioning of these applications as well as the technical infrastructure upon which the applications are built. We follow emerging technology trends and recommend the acquisition and implementation of database-related infrastructure. Database Developers supporting application teams typically design and build databases and database objects including stored procedures. We write and maintain ETL processes that support both business driven data integrity and application functional requirements. Database Developers collaborate with business and data analysts to enhance business process knowledge as well to gain an in-depth understanding of data integrity requirements. We work with both application and infrastructure teams to gain a strong comprehension of application functional requirements and to ensure that application designs integrate with database-related infrastructure in a manner that fully supports all functional and performance requirements.
Database Developers also create, maintain and enforce database standards and best practices. We automate database administration process where appropriate. We are responsible for monitoring database performance metrics and issuing alerts for potential issues. We take proactive steps to eliminate potential database-related problems.
